The Public Stand Roppongi: A Unique Standing Bar for Connections

Akitoshi Imafuku Creates an Organic and Vibrant Space

Inspired by the excitement of meeting someone new, Akitoshi Imafuku designed The Public Stand Roppongi, a standing bar in Tokyo, Japan. With its underground location, colored lighting, and graffiti, this bar creates an atmosphere that pumps up your heartbeat and encourages connections. The organic, circular shapes and the ameba-like standing table at the end of the bar help customers get closer to each other without feeling uncomfortable.

The Public Stand Roppongi is a standing bar that caters to young people looking for encounters. Its underground location gives it a secretive club-like feel, adding to the excitement of entering the space. Colored lighting throughout the bar enhances the energetic atmosphere, while graffiti adds a touch of urban vibrancy.

Imafuku's design focuses on fostering connections between people. The use of organic, circular shapes creates a sense of flow and movement, encouraging patrons to interact with one another. The standout feature of the bar is the ameba-like standing table at the end, which provides a central gathering point for customers. This unique shape allows individuals to get closer to others without feeling awkward or uncomfortable.

The Public Stand Roppongi was a collaborative effort, with Akitoshi Imafuku leading the design team. Lily Sugiyama contributed to the overall design, while Lightmoment handled the lighting design. WHOLE9 provided the graffiti art, and Yashima Creation took care of the construction.

The project began in June 2017 and was completed in September of the same year. The bar opened its doors to the public in September 2017, offering a vibrant and dynamic space for socializing and making connections.

This unique design has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity. The Public Stand Roppongi was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate exceptional technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
