Diversity and Cohesion: A Residence Designed by Jung-Yuan Hou

Creating a Warm and Connective Living Space

The residence client, being the principal owner of a trading company, has always remembered the relaxing atmosphere of the Southeast Asian island nations from his days of business travels, and hence particularly aspired to choose warm timber materials as the primary materials of the residence. The owner couple who has been busy with their business for years wished to optimize their interaction with their son, which led to our design decision to optimize the area of the public spaces imbued with the multi-function design.

The interior area of this residence, designed by Jung-Yuan Hou, spans approximately 126 square meters. The design prioritizes the connective relationships amongst the family members, emphasizing that a good design should enrich the relationship between residents and enhance their living quality. The layout planning focuses on maintaining the individuality of each area while constructing a communicative spatial relationship, transforming the residence into not just a place of dwelling, but also a warm and inviting home.

The unique properties of this design lie in its ability to empower the connective relationships amongst family members. The emphasis is on the interior space rather than the hardware and building materials. By manifesting multi-dimensional spatial layers through the use of veneer elements and clean-cut line work, the design creates a sense of depth and dimension. Lighting elements such as recessed lights, table lamps, chandeliers, and indirect lighting are strategically placed to create a diversified spatial mood and ambiance.

The design incorporates a variety of materials, including wooden louver windows, cast stone, leather, wall fabric, steel-brushed wooden veneer, iron metalwork, grey mirror, masonry materials, and imported ceramic tiles. These materials are carefully selected to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the space.

The design challenges of this project included working with the existing structure of the building, which had many protruded and recessed patches. The design team successfully cleaned up the line formwork and created a visually clean and cohesive interior space that meets the functional needs of the clients.

Located in New Taipei City, Taiwan, this project was completed in December 2017. The design reflects extensive research and consideration of the clients' preferences for a relaxing Southeast Asian island nations-inspired style. The open kitchen, flowing transparency between different areas, and the continuity of materials from public to private spaces contribute to the overall spaciousness and functionality of the residence.

This design by Jung-Yuan Hou was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. The award recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology. This design exemplifies strong technical and creative skills and contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
