The inspiration for the project came from the client's extensive collection of contemporary art paintings. The challenge was to create a space that could adequately store and display these works while also providing a comfortable living environment. The solution was an innovative exhibition wall featuring 12 sliding panels divided into six layers. This design allowed the paintings to be displayed in an organized manner, creating a dynamic and interactive art gallery within the home.
The project's unique properties lie in its simplicity and flexibility. The sliding panels, complemented by concrete-finished panels and a timber screen, provide a diverse representation of the art display, adding a sense of fun to everyday living. The materials used in the interior space, including natural masonry materials, genuine timber veneer, ironwork, concrete-finished paint, and timber floor, were chosen for their purity and simplicity, enhancing the colors and strokes of the paintings.
The technical specifications of the project were also a challenge. The residence, with an area of 165 square meters, had antiquated pipelines and a lowered ceiling due to a main beam. These issues were addressed during the renovation, with the pipelines being replaced and the ceiling issue solved by partial coverage of ironwork materials.
The design process involved a reconfiguration of the layout to orient the living room towards the outdoor lake view. This opened up the space, allowing more natural light in and creating a more open and flowing circulation. The color scheme was kept neutral, with black, white, grey, and earth colors complementing the original materials and highlighting the richness of the art paintings.
Despite the challenges, the project was a success. The design team managed to reconcile the design concept with practicality and the long-term habits of the client, creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The project was completed in September 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and has since been awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.
