Sundance: A Symphony of Grey in Apartment Design

K Chien's Award-Winning Design Transforms Everyday Spaces

The Sundance project, a 166 square meter apartment house, is a unique exploration of spatial design. K Chien, the designer, drew inspiration from the cyclical nature of everyday postures - lying, sitting, standing, and walking. This inspiration led to the creation of a space that is both functional and fluid, with the purpose of each area changing as the circulation within the apartment evolves.

What sets Sundance apart is its refined precision in color choice. The grey-scale color scheme, punctuated by colors of dark metal, wooden surfaces, golden brown, cool glasses, and planted greenery, creates a vivid clarity within the space. The interplay of full and partial sunlight throughout the day further enhances this effect, lighting up niches and corners in the grey non-dimensional space.

The design realization of Sundance involved the use of iron, wood, Polish special paint, special corrugated marble, etro glass, and enamel floor. The contrast between the wooden and metal components adds a warm temperature to the space, humanizing the interface of life within the apartment. This proportional division of materials and colors not only addresses visual concerns but also encourages residents to perceive the changing aesthetics of nature within their living space.

Throughout the design process, K Chien faced the challenge of integrating the source of light into the design. By studying the source of light every day, the designer was able to create beautiful lighting that aligns with the natural light. This research also informed the presentation of the grey scale within the space.

The Sundance project, completed in August 2018 in Taipei City, Taiwan, has been recognized for its innovative design. It was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
