Le's House: A Unique and Cozy Residential Design

Creating a Carefree and Natural Living Space

Different from a general purpose villa which features equal-width parallel floors stacking upon one another, Le's House, designed by Chung Chih-Chien, stands out with its staggered floors that offer a panoramic angle of view and a unique spatial experience. The girdled spatial staircases at the center of the house serve as a vital and metaphorical element, connecting each floor and adding to the overall design aesthetic.

This 86-square-meter multi-story residence underwent a complete renovation to provide an elderly-friendly living space with a warm, cozy, and bright atmosphere. The design approach adopted for Le's House follows the "less-is-more" philosophy, featuring streamlined art decor and low-chroma, health-friendly materials that create a carefree and natural touch.

The house is predominantly furnished with natural woody colors that are inclusive and skin-friendly. Light gray stucco and soft white coating mediate the base and profile, giving the interior a modern aesthetic that exudes sophistication and simplicity. One of the ingenious features of the design is the storage space underneath the staircases. The treads can be pulled or lifted open, maximizing every inch of space within the spatial staircases.

Le's House distinguishes between public and private spaces. Upon entering through the front door, a tall shoe cabinet stands at the shoe-wearing area, properly separated from the dining room and living room by a sliding door. This sliding door, when closed, joins the kitchen entrance to form a consecutive facet of the wood-looking wall, providing a natural view to appreciate from the dining room. The public spaces for families consist of a living room, a dining room, a window-side leisure area, and an independent kitchen. The spatial staircases act as the center of flows, connecting the three stories which host a master bedroom, one piano room, one storage room, two children's bedrooms, and two bathrooms. This thoughtful layout allows for intimate interactions among family members while also providing spaces for solitude.

The unique layout of the house posed a challenge that required careful consideration. The indoor spatial staircase, in particular, needed to be slim, space-saving, safe, stable, and visually appealing. Metal handrails were chosen to complement the wooden steps, resulting in a cylinder-shaped staircase that seamlessly blends functionality and design sense.

Completed in October 2020 in Taipei City, Taiwan, Le's House stands as a testament to the successful integration of art, architecture, and design. Its unique features, attention to detail, and focus on creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and contribute to improving the quality of life.
