Impar Flores: A Cosy and Industrial Restaurant and Bar in Oporto Downtown

Preserving History and Creating a Unique Dining Experience

The Impar Flores restaurant and bar, designed by Frederico Roeber, is a stunning example of how historical elements can be preserved and combined with modern design to create a unique and cosy dining experience. Located in Oporto's downtown area, this project showcases the city's industrial heritage while offering a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

The key inspiration for the Impar Flores design was the building itself, which is nestled in Oporto's historical area and connected to the city's industrial past. The project aimed to preserve the pre-existing elements, such as the granite wall, while incorporating design components like light fixtures and mirrors to highlight their beauty. One of the standout features is the metallic net that hangs over the bar, serving both as storage and a source of light. The kitchen elevator is cleverly connected to this net, showcasing its machinery and cables and adding to the interior's industrial look.

What sets Impar Flores apart is its innovative use of space. With only 35 square meters per floor, the design team faced the challenge of creating a functional and inviting environment. The solution was to place the bar counter at the center of the space, dividing it into two sections: the bar and the restaurant. This not only maximized the available area but also created a natural flow of people and light. Each section has its own entrance and outdoor area, allowing guests to enjoy different atmospheres within the same establishment.

The design of Impar Flores emphasizes the pre-existing elements while adding modern touches to enhance comfort. The original granite wall, iron structures, metallic net, wall paintings, and light fixtures contribute to the industrial setting, while the dim lighting, large mirrors, wooden details, and fabric accents create a warm and inviting ambiance.

Impar Flores is not just a visually stunning space; it is also highly functional. The design team carefully considered the layout to ensure easy access to all areas, including the kitchen, storage, facilities, bathrooms, dining area, and bar. The architecture solution successfully combines functionality with aesthetics, creating a space that is both practical and visually appealing.

The Impar Flores project was designed in 2015 and completed in 2017. Throughout the process, the design team prioritized the preservation of historical elements, paying homage to Oporto's industrial heritage. The rehabilitation of the building required meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the previous structure was maintained and integrated seamlessly into the new design.

Impar Flores has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. Impar Flores stands as a testament to the power of design to create unique and memorable experiences.
