Wolo: A Bold and Modern Day Alchemist Hotel Reflecting Kuala Lumpur's DNA

Designing a Contemporary Malaysian Brand

The Wolo hotel project, led by Creative Director Andy Wong and the design team consisting of Lead Designer Vincent Yee and Designer Maggie Ho, began in December 2018 and was completed in October 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Wolo hotel design is its reflection of Malaysian culture and the Wolo brand values in a contemporary, creative, and bold way. The designers have put an enormous amount of thought, consideration, and attention to detail into every aspect of the project.

Kuala Lumpur's long and glorious history of pewter products is showcased throughout the hotel. The handmade hotel reception counter and entrance grand handle are finished with custom pewter, adding a touch of elegance and uniqueness to the design.

The design team faced various challenges in bringing Kuala Lumpur's "DNA" into the project. For example, they incorporated the topography layered pattern of mining fields, representing the city's mining history, into the steel corridor carpet, ceiling pendant lights, and hotel room mirrors. The installation of the "Kuala Lumpur Wall" in the lobby, which showcases the meaning of "muddy confluence," was also a challenging task that required meticulous design and execution.

Wolo hotel has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2020, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design of Wolo hotel integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to guests.
