Uptown: A Neo-Classical Pub with a Unique Ambiance

A Warm and Inviting Space Inspired by Modern Irish Pubs

Designed by Devesh Bhatia, Uptown is a neo-classical pub that appeals to all ages equally. The space is designed to be a cosy den, with a mezzanine floor suspended from the ceiling, creating a column-less area below. The supporting cables from the ceiling themselves form a unique design element. The mezzanine floor offers an open, elevated, and cosy area, while the area below provides a warm and private space. The seating beyond the mezzanines is full-height, giving a larger feel to the overall space.

The mezzanine floor in Uptown is created using wood planks and mild steel sections, with support cables made of steel tension cables and natural jute rope. The flooring is done in self-leveling white concrete, while the wood paneling is polished in a natural color with a mid-gloss finish. The existing walls were scraped and cleaned to expose the brick walls, adding to the pub's rustic charm.

Entering Uptown, you are greeted by a large double-height area that resembles a unique street. To your right, you'll find large brewery tanks and a long bar, accompanied by a live pizzeria and smoking room. The pub space includes two bifurcating staircases that lead to two cosy mezzanines. The seating options are open and breathy in the full-height areas, private on the mezzanines, and quiet and cosy under the mezzanines.

The Uptown project was started in October 2015 at Galleria market, Gurgaon, Haryana, India, and completed on 20th December 2015. The design team, led by Devesh Bhatia, included Pratyay Chakrabarti, Kamal Kishore, Swaran Singh, and Parag Anand.

Uptown's unique design was achieved through extensive research on typical roadway balconies and sitting spaces. The challenge of creating a column-free space under the mezzanine was successfully overcome, resulting in a one-of-a-kind pub experience.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Uptown's design integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
