Pratyay's design draws inspiration from roadside cafes and eateries, creating a central space for people to gather, eat, and enjoy performances. The design mirrors the restless energy of the youth, aiming to create order in disorder, calm in chaos, and clarity in confusion. The space is designed for large performances, providing a platform for both established and upcoming talent.
What sets MTV Flyp apart is its dual functionality. During the day, it serves as a co-working space, transforming into a lively restaurant with a bar and brewery at night. The design caters to the young crowd, reflecting the vibrant energy of MTV India's shows and contemporary music genres. The intent was to create a space that resonates with the youth's abundant energy, where there is a sense of anarchy, chaos, and confusion.
The technical realization of the design is equally impressive. The flooring combines different vitrified tiles with wooden battens, while the walls are clad with fly ash blocks fixed with a central band. The ceiling features a perforated MS sheet with acoustic foam, and the bar counter is adorned with speaker cones, with mics serving as light fixtures. The outdoor walls are clad with container doors on one side and cement punning on the other, with graffiti running on almost all walls.
Spread over 600 sq.mt with 200 covers, the space is divided into distinct areas, including a merchandise area, a bar counter, and a courtyard area with an openable roof. The bar counter here is designed in an old matador van, and the stage is set up in a container parked on top of a truck chassis. This design was realized in Chandigarh, India, from November 2016 to April 2017.
Pratyay's design faced several challenges, the foremost being the need for the space to function as a co-working space during the day and transform into a buzzing cafe with performances at night. Additionally, the enclosed space and the courtyard had to be integrated to create a unified space oriented towards the performance stage. Despite these challenges, Pratyay's innovative design has resulted in a dynamic, youth-centric space that is perfect for big music performances.
In conclusion, MTV Flyp is a testament to Devesh Pratyay's innovative design approach. It is a space that not only caters to the needs of the youth but also provides a platform for performances, thereby fostering a vibrant cultural scene. This design's success is further underscored by its recognition at the A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2018, a testament to its creativity, technical excellence, and innovation.
