Big Easy Winebar and Grill: A South African Sensation

Designers Therese Virserius and Regina Virserius Bring South African Flair to Casual Dining

The design of Big Easy Winebar and Grill was inspired by the vision of professional golfer Ernie 'Big Easy' Els and his interpretation of his native South Africa. The collaboration between Virserius Studio, Beyond Hospitality, and Els' design team resulted in a welcoming and open atmosphere that ensures comfort for all visitors.

Distinctly South African elements are woven into the design of the restaurant, creating a deep connection with its landscaped surroundings. The casual environment is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, reflecting the inclusive nature of South African culture. This unique blend of design elements sets Big Easy Winebar and Grill apart from other restaurants.

The design process was not without its challenges. As this was Virserius Studio's first project in Africa, they had to adapt to a different cultural and operational environment. Despite these challenges, the team was able to successfully incorporate local art and sustainable materials into the design, demonstrating their commitment to respecting the local culture and environment.

The Big Easy Winebar and Grill project began in 2014, with construction starting in 2015. The restaurant had a soft opening in the fall of 2015, followed by a grand opening in the winter of 2016. The project was a success, earning the Silver A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2017. This award is given to designs that display outstanding expertise and innovation, and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

Big Easy Winebar and Grill is more than just a restaurant - it's a superior culinary, cultural, and sensory experience.
