The Winding Sunlight: An Innovative Preschool Library Design

Wei Ju Wang's Award-Winning Design Encourages Exploration and Interaction

Wei Ju Wang's innovative design, The Winding Sunlight, is a preschool picture book library that encourages exploration and interaction. Inspired by children's perception and interaction with their environment, the design uses flowing lines and contrasting colors to create a dynamic space.

The Winding Sunlight is not your typical library. It stands out with its unique use of transparent space and lack of absolute demarcation. The design is laid out in bright and lively mustard green and turkey blue, and adopts a three-dimensional shape to enclose the geometric soft decoration in multiple spatial configurations. The space is cut out to form an open free field, hiding its function in the cabinet and using the arc and the rounded window view as the cutting.

The design was realized through the concept of an open field with multiple functions. The learning space is not restricted to traditional classrooms, maintaining flexibility in the field. The design team used exclusive configurations for children, taking into consideration the comprehensive characteristics of the space. The curve elements are gradually deployed in space, using circular, arcuate, and linear flow.

Technical specifications of the design reveal that it is exclusively designed for preschool children. It uses arc curves and bright colors to appropriately adjust the height of steps and laminates. Wooden materials and a three-dimensional ceiling cut by 3D thunder are used, which matches harmoniously with bright colors. The design elements include the free curves and three-dimensional geometric objects in the whole space.

The design team had to overcome several challenges to realize this project. In order to make the geometric shapes have distinct three-dimensional characteristics in the space, a corner of the ceiling was specially cut and customized with wooden fence-like pieces of wood. The arrangement was arranged with smooth curve textures to match the overall spatial tone. The three-dimensional wooden grid ceiling presents a linear distribution, echoing the arc-cut bookcases, the spiral ceiling of reading rooms, and cushion-backed chairs with arm-wrapped.

The Winding Sunlight project started in October 2018 and finished in August 2019 in Taiwan. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
