Wil 11 Residence: A Nature-Inspired Oasis in Urban Malaysia

Ken Thong and Emma Yap's Award-Winning Design Blends Modern Comfort with Tropical Aesthetics

In the bustling district of Shah Alam in Selangor, Malaysia, a semi-detached residence stands out for its unique blend of contemporary design and nature-inspired elements. The Wil 11 Residence, designed by Ken Thong and Emma Yap, is a testament to the possibilities of integrating modern urban living with the tranquility of a tropical setting.

The design of the Wil 11 Residence was inspired by its lush green surroundings. Thong and Yap decided to model the residence after a nature-inspired lifestyle that is both rustic and comfortable. Contemporary design features were applied to lighten up its overall appearance while highlighting the openness of its interior architecture. The result is a cozy home that perfectly suits a tropical climate and an urban setting.

What sets the Wil 11 Residence apart is its nature-inspired design. The home features comfortable neutral hues and warm wood textures, capturing the rejuvenating vibe of its surroundings. The majestic wooden wall in the living room is matched with sheer curtains that accentuate the grand double-volume ceiling, highlighting the prominence of its architecture. The minimalistic approach to furnishing allows the inhabitants to enjoy the alluring tropical climate in style and comfort.

The realization of this design involved the use of natural building materials that correspond to the nature-inspired concept. The main feature wall in the living area is decked out in slim and simple natural timber planks to highlight its extraordinary height. The giant glass windows are equipped with roller blinds for enhanced functionality, and further softened with sheer white curtains to create a graceful and elegant look. The design is personalized with authentic wooden finishes and cement-like elements, which beautifully contrast the neutral color scheme.

The Wil 11 Residence is a 3,500 square feet semi-detached house with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. The wall that separates the dry kitchen was torn down to make way for a large island counter and dining table, providing a greater flow while maintaining visual connectivity between spaces. The absence of clutter ensures that the interior is beautifully illuminated by natural lighting, enhancing the spaciousness of its open space layout.

The project started in July 2016 and was completed in September 2016. The balance between practicality and aesthetics was a major focus in the design process. Durable materials such as timber wood, exposed concrete, and quartz stone were incorporated into the design to provide a hassle-free option for the inhabitants. The design represents a contemporary interpretation of a family-centered home that appeals to the majority of young, urban Malaysians.

The Wil 11 Residence was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
