Joy City Kid's World: A Dandelion Hill Inspired Masterpiece

Shen Junwei's Award-Winning Design Merges Retail and Entertainment

Shen Junwei's Joy City Kid's World, a unique shopping center design, draws inspiration from the concept of Dandelion Hill. This innovative design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, merges retail stores and public entertainment areas into a vibrant, interactive space for children and families.

The design's inspiration stems from the rhythm of "contour lines" in an undulating geography, much like the form of hills. This 4200 square meter space integrates a three-layer staggered structure of different heights, presenting a challenge that Shen Junwei successfully overcame. The result is a space that grows and flows naturally, much like a dandelion hill.

One of the unique properties of this design is its use of color. Like a palette knocked over, the project uses up to 200 colors in different themed areas. Art installations and stores merge, bringing livelihood and amusing expectations to the space. The design encourages communication between families and provides a nurturing environment for children's growth.

The design realization technology involved the use of various materials including aluminum, iron, stainless steel, wood, diatom mud, and terrazzo. The main scene is in the lift hall, where dandelion stems appear to break through the soil and spread. The "singing" stem art installation encourages children to listen to nature, fostering a close connection with the environment.

Shen Junwei's design also features interactive elements. The entire space metaphorically represents the process of life from budding, growing to maturity. It encourages creative caprices and ideas to grow in children, leading them to explore the magic of nature. This integration of recreational activities in retailing spaces is an experimental innovation.

The project was completed in July 2018 in Shanghai. It is a spatial extension of the love-themed shopping mall, Shanghai Joy City. Designed for children aged 3 to 10, it provides enriching, interesting, and diversified experiences. The design was recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
