Bent Wood Cajon: A Unique Blend of Heritage and Craft

Traditional Craft Musical Instrument

Inspired by the rich heritage of Taiwanese bentwood craft, designer Hsu Chung-Miao introduces the world to the Bent Wood Cajon, a truly unique and innovative musical instrument.

The Bent Wood Cajon, designed by Hsu Chung-Miao, is a testament to the marriage of design and traditional craft. With the gradual disappearance of bentwood craft, Hsu Chung-Miao aims to revive this art form and bring it into the spotlight. By incorporating bentwood techniques into the construction of a musical instrument, the Bent Wood Cajon showcases the beauty and versatility of this unique Taiwanese artisan.

What sets the Bent Wood Cajon apart is its oval-shaped design, a first in the world of craft cajons. This innovative shape not only allows the bending technique to fully showcase itself on the drum's body but also adds an extra sharp and loud tone compared to traditional cajons. The result is a richer and more dynamic performance.

The Bent Wood Cajon is meticulously crafted using birch and walnut, employing the intricate bentwood technique. The body of the cajon is formed in one piece, with the surface cut manually and finely polished. To add a touch of uniqueness, a natural burning method is used to color the wood. The configuration of the strings is also readjusted to ensure the best possible sound quality.

Measuring at 300mm in width, 300mm in depth, and 470mm in height, the Bent Wood Cajon is a compact and portable musical instrument that delivers exceptional sound quality and performance.

The project, which started in May 2015 and concluded in July 2016, was carried out in Taiwan. Since its completion, the Bent Wood Cajon has been exhibited in Japan, Shanghai, and Taiwan, garnering attention and admiration from music enthusiasts and design aficionados alike.

Hsu Chung-Miao's design is not only visually stunning but also carries a deeper meaning. It serves as a tribute to the dwindling art of bentwood craft in Taiwan, preserving its legacy and showcasing its potential in new and unexpected ways.

The Bent Wood Cajon has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Musical Instruments Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to industry standards. The Bent Wood Cajon's integration of traditional craft and modern design principles contributes to a better world by bridging the gap between heritage and innovation.

With the Bent Wood Cajon, Hsu Chung-Miao has not only created a remarkable musical instrument but also reignited interest in the art of bentwood craft. This innovative design serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving traditional crafts and finding new ways to incorporate them into our modern lives.
