Pole Saw: Protecting Falling Dust

User-friendly design with innovative features

Garden tools are widely used, and pole saws are essential for cutting high branches. However, the UNNC M3 Dept and XC-Tools design team identified some common issues with traditional pole saws. Falling sawdust often poses a challenge during cutting, and the weight of the tool can cause fatigue. To address these concerns, the team developed a unique pole saw with innovative features.

A transparent umbrella-shaped cover was designed to protect users from falling sawdust while cutting branches. This feature ensures a clear line of sight and enhances safety during operation. Additionally, an extra movable ball at the bottom of the pole saw allows for easy transportation between workspaces or from home to the workplace.

The design incorporates various materials and technologies to achieve optimal performance. Standard parts such as the saw chain and guide bar are used, while components like the scabbard, motor shell, oil cap, knobs, handle, trigger, and trigger lockout are made from ABS for durability. The outer and inner poles are constructed using fiberglass pipes for their appropriate performance. The transparent sawdust baffle is made from PVC, providing both transparency and protection. Antiskid parts are used for encapsulation, ensuring a secure grip.

The pole saw offers adjustable height, ranging from 1.9m to 2.6m, catering to different cutting needs. Its user-friendly design emphasizes ease of use and interaction. The part to open the cover is highlighted with bright colors, making it easy for users to locate and operate. Moving the pole saw is straightforward and hassle-free.

The project was completed in August 2018 in Ningbo, China. Extensive research was conducted to address user protection and labor-saving movement. The concept development stage presented the most significant challenge, requiring innovative thinking and problem-solving.

The Pole Saw design by UNNC M3 Dept and XC-Tools was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Hardware, Power, and Hand Tools Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade recognizes the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements. The Pole Saw's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.
