Lotus Restaurant

Redesigning Oriental Aesthetics

Lotus Restaurant, designed by wulicheng, draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhou dunyi's essay "Ode to the Lotus Flower." This unique space redefines traditional Chinese architecture to create a dynamic and flexible dining experience.

The interior of Lotus Restaurant is a creative reconstruction that maximizes space and functionality. The designer has added an entire indoor Chinese architectural structure, dividing the space into two floors. The second floor features a large hall and two side halls, each serving different functions. The division between these halls is achieved through five-meter-high swinging doors, allowing for easy blocking and reconnection of the space. This design caters to both individual diners seeking privacy and large groups looking to host parties.

The use of materials such as oak flooring, oak plates, black glazed brick, rough stone, metal mesh, stainless steel, oxidized brass, iron plates, and wallpaper adds to the unique character of Lotus Restaurant. The combination of these elements creates a visually stunning environment that seamlessly blends Eastern and Western aesthetics.

The central axis of the space is marked by a translucent acrylic red wall, which serves as a focal point. At the opposite end of the room, a pure copper fireplace complements the red wall. The movement of people around this central axis showcases the interaction between architecture and customers. Natural lighting is achieved through the refraction of light from the two side halls, creating a soft and inviting atmosphere along the central axis.

The collision and blend of East-West food culture is exemplified by the contrast between the Chinese architectural space and the serving of Western cuisine. This creates a dramatic scene that sparks a cultural dialogue between people and the architecture. The design of Lotus Restaurant encourages customers to explore the gaps and connections between different cultures, making it a truly immersive dining experience.

The project, located in Xi'an, Shanxi, started in 2016 and was completed in 2017. Throughout the design process, the challenge was to balance the profound and heavy nature of oriental aesthetics with modern elements. By reorganizing traditional Chinese lattice screens using modern acrylic glass material, the designer achieved a contemporary interpretation of Eastern aesthetics.

Lotus Restaurant was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design. This recognition highlights the restaurant's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology. By contributing to quality of life improvements, Lotus Restaurant exemplifies the potential of design to make the world a better place.
