Flying Apsaras: A Modern Interpretation of Dunhuang Murals

A Fusion of Tradition and Technology

The combination of traditional culture and modern design is the source of a series of illustration concepts.

Flying Apsaras, a set of illustrations by Weirong Yusi and Yanmin Huokai, breathes new life into the traditional Dunhuang murals. Through innovative computer technology, these illustrations have been applied to various forms of expression, such as the internet, print media, and cartoons on WeChat and QQ. The aim is to disseminate China's excellent traditional culture and showcase cultural innovation.

This collection of aesthetic illustrations showcases the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese Flying Apsaras painting using modern computing technology. The Dunhuang Flying Apsaras illustrations possess characteristics of exhibition, creativity, design, and application. They reflect the harmonious combination of Chinese traditional culture and modern computer technology.

The series of illustrations and expressions are drawn using vector design software, resulting in beautiful and exquisite details. The high-level printing and manufacturing technologies used in their production ensure that the illustrations are showcased with utmost precision.

The specifications for the printing illustrations are 800mm (H) x 800mm (W) for the sheet size, and a data size of 1800mm (H) x 800mm (W) at 300dpi in CMYK color mode.

Key design tags for this project include Dunhuang murals, Flying Apsaras, illustrations, expressions, and computer paintings.

The design team, led by Art Director Huo Kai and designers Wei Rong, Zhang Yusi, and Wang Yanmin, worked diligently to overcome various challenges. These challenges included accurately capturing the characteristics of Dunhuang murals, merging modern aesthetics with traditional murals, combining computer technology with traditional crafts, and adhering to the standards of character aesthetics.

The Flying Apsaras project was launched in China in 2018, and it serves as an important representative of China's intangible culture. By drawing Flying Apsaras illustrations using computer vector painting technology, the essence of Flying Apsaras murals is creatively inherited and displayed. This brings Dunhuang murals into the public's vision and modern life. The combination of computer technology and mural art in this project showcases creativity, design, and application, making traditional art more fashionable and catering to social needs.

This design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Flying Apsaras illustrations are respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.
