Moo: The Multifunctional Holder

A Unique Object with Known-Unknown Form

Designed by Zhihao Guo

Moo is a multifunctional object designed by Zhihao Guo that challenges traditional notions of form and function. Inspired by ambiguous forms found in nature, Guo aimed to create an object with a known-unknown form, one that is both deeply familiar and unsubscribed. The goal was to allow users to engage with the object and create their own unique relationship with it, giving it a sense of identity that is constantly evolving.

What sets Moo apart is its versatility. It can be used as a holder, paperweight, table sculpture, toy, or even a massager. The function of Moo depends entirely on the user's imagination and creativity. The design features four bumps on top, providing a clear indication that it can support something. The bulges on the top and bottom concavity allow multiple Moo objects to be piled up together in different ways, offering endless possibilities for different purposes.

Made from maple wood using CNC technology, Moo boasts a dimension of L 89mm, W 89mm, H 72mm. Its organic yet structured shape is a result of Guo's attempt to blur the boundary between art and design. By incorporating organic forms found in nature and infusing them with a sense of organization and structure, Moo achieves a unique aesthetic that is both playful and functional.

Guo's design philosophy challenges the notion that form follows function. While functionality is typically considered the primary focus in product design, Guo believes that function can also follow form. Moo invites users to interact with it in their own way, allowing for a range of behaviors and interpretations. It embraces ambiguity and encourages users to explore their own creativity.

Moo was created in March 2018 at Cranbrook Academy of Art. It represents Guo's exploration of the intersection between art and design, as well as his desire to create objects that are not limited by predefined functions. With its unique form and multifunctional capabilities, Moo has been recognized for its excellence in design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Decorative Items and Homeware Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to industry standards.

With Moo, Zhihao Guo has created a truly unique object that challenges traditional design principles and invites users to engage with it in their own creative way. Its multifunctionality, organic yet structured form, and the sense of ambiguity it embodies make it a standout piece in the world of design.
