Flora: A Multifunctional Vase and Stand

A Sculptural Centerpiece to Elevate Nature in Your Home

Flora, designed by Lorena Sauras, is a unique and multifunctional vase that pays homage to the concept of metamorphosis in plants. With its elegant design and thoughtful craftsmanship, Flora aims to promote a deeper connection with nature in our daily lives.

Flora is not just a vase; it is also a stand that elevates flowers and fruits to the level they deserve. Inspired by the beauty of nature's evolution, Sauras designed Flora as a tribute to the concept that flowers and fruits are essentially the same, just at different stages of their lives. By showcasing this transformation, Flora encourages us to appreciate the interconnectedness of nature.

What sets Flora apart is its material choice. Crafted from snow-white translucent alabaster, Flora exudes a sense of spirituality and purity. Alabaster has long been revered for its positive energy and ability to connect us with the simple pleasures in life. The alabaster used in Flora is sourced from the Ebro Valley in Aragon, Spain, known for its pure and high-quality stone.

The design of Flora consists of three pieces of alabaster: a central pillar and two round plates. These elements come together to create a sturdy and visually striking stand. A hand-blown glass tube is inserted into the central pillar, providing a water reservoir for flowers. The glass tube can be easily removed for cleaning or replenishing the water.

During the design process, Sauras faced several challenges. Alabaster is a delicate material that can deteriorate when exposed to water. To protect the surface without compromising its beauty, Flora undergoes a special treatment. Additionally, the shape of the central pillar had to be adjusted to accommodate the fragility of the alabaster. To ensure a smooth assembly experience and stabilize the connections between the alabaster pieces, natural cork is used in the connection points.

Flora was initially designed in 2017 as a personal project, made from resin in San Francisco. After further development and adjustments, the final design was realized in luxurious alabaster and blown glass in Spain. The first alabaster prototype was exhibited during Milan Design Week in September 2021, and the production version was completed in 2022.

Flora's exceptional design and craftsmanship have been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Decorative Items and Homeware Design category. This award celebrates designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. Flora's incorporation of art, science, design, and technology truly makes it a standout piece.

Flora is not just a vase; it is a statement piece that invites us to appreciate the beauty and transformation of nature. With its elegant design, unique material, and multifunctional features, Flora is a sculptural centerpiece that brings a touch of sophistication and a deeper connection with nature to any home.
