Umbrella Earth: A Thematic Installation

Recycling Broken Umbrellas to Create Environmental Awareness

Umbrella Earth is a unique installation that aims to draw attention to environmental pollution by repurposing broken umbrellas. Designed by Naai-Jung Shih, this thematic installation showcases the potential of recycling and highlights the need for sustainable practices.

The inspiration for Umbrella Earth came from the aftermath of rainstorms and typhoons, where streets are often littered with broken umbrellas. Naai-Jung Shih saw an opportunity to transform these discarded items into something meaningful. "It is possible to recycle the Earth starting from recycling umbrellas," says the designer. "I would like to make the best of the broken ones by recycling them."

The installation features ribs and stretchers from broken umbrellas, carefully deconstructed and interlaced to create a two-way interlacing mechanism. The arrangement of these rib sets creates a dynamic folding and unfolding pattern, reminiscent of the wind pressure experienced during a storm. This unique configuration invites viewers to explore the tension of linear members from different angles and appreciate the beauty in repurposed materials.

Creating Umbrella Earth was not without its challenges. Separating the parts of the umbrellas and managing the folding and unfolding mechanism required meticulous attention to detail. However, the use of pins and hinges allowed for flexibility and enabled the creation of a versatile interface.

The installation is accompanied by a bag opener, symbolizing the idea of storing something good out of waste. It serves as a reminder to make the best of recycled items and transform them into valuable resources. Through Umbrella Earth, Naai-Jung Shih hopes to inspire viewers to consider their own consumption habits and the impact they have on the environment.

Umbrella Earth is currently on display in Taipei, where Naai-Jung Shih's architectural design studio is located. The larger design measures 30.5 cm (W) x 23 cm (D) x 93 cm (H), while the smaller design measures 33 cm (W) x 25 cm (D) x 56 cm (H).

This innovative installation has been recognized for its excellence and creativity. In 2019, Umbrella Earth was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. This prestigious award honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

Umbrella Earth serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of recycling and sustainable practices. By transforming broken umbrellas into a thought-provoking installation, Naai-Jung Shih encourages us to reconsider our relationship with the environment and find creative solutions to combat pollution.
