The inspiration behind Nightshot was to create a captivating introduction for virtual tours. Instead of starting the tour from inside an object, Weil decided to begin with an aerial view of the location, shot at night. This concept not only provides a unique perspective but also adds an element of surprise and intrigue for the viewers.
Nightshot is not just a regular aerial panorama; it is a technical masterpiece. Captured using a Phantom 4 Pro drone, the panorama consists of 136 single images shot in a span of two minutes, capturing all the details between the maximum white and maximum black. These images were processed in Adobe Lightroom, stitched together in PTGui into a single high dynamic range (HDR) image, and finally retouched, tone-mapped, and color-corrected in Adobe Photoshop. The final HDR image boasts a resolution of 392 megapixels and a color depth of 32 bit.
The design of Nightshot posed several challenges, the most significant of which was capturing the perfect timing for the shot. However, overcoming these challenges resulted in a panoramic photo that not only impressed the client but also led to a completely new concept for Weil's virtual tours. Now, all his tours start with a similar night view panorama, providing a consistent and unique experience for the viewers.
Mathias Weil's Nightshot is a testament to the power of innovation and creativity. It has not only revolutionized the concept of virtual tours but also demonstrated how technology can be leveraged to create unique and immersive experiences. The design was recognized for its creativity and technical excellence, winning the Silver A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award in 2019.
In conclusion, Nightshot is a perfect blend of art, technology, and innovation. It showcases how a simple idea, when executed with creativity and technical expertise, can transform a conventional concept into an extraordinary experience. As virtual reality continues to evolve, designs like Nightshot will continue to push the boundaries and redefine the user experience.
