Ripple: A Dynamic Fusion of Art and Functionality

Yılmaz Dogan, the creative mind behind Ripple, was inspired by the shortcomings of traditional coffee tables. Often placed at the heart of a room, these tables frequently fall short in terms of accessibility, a gap typically filled by service tables. Ripple, however, addresses this issue with its moveable upper table and asymmetrical arm, offering the functionality of a service table. This dynamism aligns with Ripple's fluid design lines, echoing the variability of a water drop and its waves.

What sets Ripple apart is its dual nature. It possesses all the characteristics of a static coffee table, yet it also has the dynamic structure and function of a service table. As it meets changing needs, it naturally reflects the grace of a splashing water drop. Its asymmetrical arm structure allows the service platform to rotate 360 degrees, serving all planar directions on a single axis.

Ripple can be produced using modern technological tools and CNC machinery. Its construction involves metal structural elements, a natural massive wooden body, and upper table materials such as massive, laminate, glass, and marble. The main body is designed as lacquered on MDF, with wave patterns prepared by CNC processing units. The carrying eccentric rod, a crucial component, is made from hardened transmission steel and is supported.

The design of Ripple is inspired by the leap of a drop. The process of a water drop disappearing, becoming still, and returning to self after the splash is the reflection of Ripple's dynamic and static character. Ripple, too, starts a motion with its moving table and then returns to its stillness. This design not only serves a functional purpose but also creates an aesthetic experience, embodying different functions like a dynamic work of art rather than a mere coffee table.

This design was not without its challenges. The most difficult part of the process was constructing the carrier eccentric arm of Ripple, the main character of the moving table. This part, made of special hardened transmission steel, is assembled from the bottom of the table by the bearing system, thus integrating the system. Despite these challenges, Ripple was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
