With a background in architecture and years of interior design experience, Hsin Hua Yu approached this project with a fresh perspective. By adopting a modern design approach and utilizing traditional Chinese materials, the design successfully reconstructs and interprets the essence of Chinese architecture. The overall structure, landscape design, and interior layout all reflect the Chinese sentiments of the Middle Way and warmth, creating a harmonious connection to the lives of the residents.
Located in Keelung, Northern Taiwan, this residence takes full advantage of its natural surroundings. Genuine rock and timber materials, such as masonry sheets, granite, Taiwan Cypress, and natural-looking art stones, were used both in the interior and exterior design. This choice not only accentuates the environmental conditions of the area, but also creates a seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.
The overall building footprint covers an area of 165 square meters, with the interior occupying 66 square meters across four stories. The architectural design breaks away from the traditional pitched roof form, opting for an open and visually penetrating layout that frames the greenery and water elements of the landscaped garden view.
Chinese Zen Style, Modern Technique, Reconstruction, Landscaping, and Natural Materials are just a few of the keywords that capture the essence of this design. The collaboration between Hsin Hua Yu and the client resulted in a modern residence that caters not only to residential needs, but also to social programs.
The transformation of the old house into a new building with an exquisite landscaped view was made possible through the reconstruction of the architecture. The interior layout and circulation paths were carefully considered and modified to accommodate the living rituals of the inhabitants. The result is a residence that seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics.
The project, which was completed in February 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, required extensive research and material selection. Hsin Hua Yu traveled around Taiwan in search of materials that would effectively communicate the intended design vocabulary. The effort paid off, as the chosen materials perfectly embody the cultural legacy of the Greater Chinese tradition.
Winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design, this residence has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. The design not only incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology, but also contributes to improvements in quality of life, making the world a better place.
With its unique blend of Chinese tradition and modern design, Legacy is a treasured residence that showcases the beauty of cultural heritage while providing a comfortable and stylish living space for its residents.
