The NTC tower is located in the emerging Central Business District (CBD) in Taichung, with convenient access to the train station and public transport. Its innovative interpretation of the urban setback rules allows natural integration into the urban fabric. The unique form of the building has not only offered a cultural identity to the project itself, but also sets the tone of this new district with its landmark feature.
The elliptical shape of the building allows maximum light penetration to the office area. Vertical greening with local plant resources on the east and west façades, as well as the rooftop, enhances energy efficiency. In addition to offering an outdoor experience with a pleasant view, solar panels and windmills are located on the top of the tower to achieve sustainability requirements. The whole design process involves Building Information Modeling (BIM) and a parametric system, maximizing building performance under rigorous control.
The design offers a comprehensive urban image, reflecting both the city master plan intention and traditional Chinese culture. The optimized floor plans vary from one level to another, activating the banal working environment by providing vertical sky gardens and balconies. The flexible space usage ensures worker satisfaction and promotes a healthier work style.
The city master plan requires a gradual setback of the tower as the floor level rises. The building intelligently converts this restriction into a creative concept that concurrently responds to local culture. The faceted façade undulates with horizontal awnings, distinctive rain covers, and window-walls to emphasize the unique curvy shape of the building.
The National Trade Center is a prime example of how architecture can reflect cultural symbolism while adhering to urban planning requirements and sustainability goals. This design by Aedas was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019, a testament to the firm's commitment to creating marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that advance art, design, and technology.
