Forestry Ocean: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

Yi-Chun Pan's Award-Winning Design Transforms Residential Spaces into Natural Sanctuaries

In the bustling Taipei Metropolitan Area, a unique architectural gem stands out. The Forestry Ocean, a residential building designed by Yi-Chun Pan, harmoniously blends the built environment with the natural world, creating a tranquil space in the heart of the city.

Yi-Chun Pan's inspiration for the Forestry Ocean came from the surrounding landscape. The building is located adjacent to the Yangming Mountainous Area, with several ecological rehabilitation parks and the renowned Beitou Hot Spring area nearby. The design reflects this natural setting, using gray-black stone, dark brown metal grating, and ceramic tiles to create a façade reminiscent of green branches. This design not only mirrors the surrounding greenery but also forms a striking spatial comparison.

The Forestry Ocean's unique features lie in its ability to provide a calming, immersive, and perceptive space amidst a fast-paced society. The main public areas in the building are designed with white and dark wood veneers, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The hall's ceiling is composed of horizontal strips subtly embedded with light, and the walls feature three-dimensional wood stacked in a trapezoid shape. These elements bring a sense of natural warmth into the room while creating rich and colorful layers.

The design also extends to the community gym, which features a rectangular layout and large horizontal floor-to-ceiling windows. The wooden material, combined with a wall of wooden grilles, maintains the design's consistency. The deliberate placement of lamps creates an effect reminiscent of sunlight filtering through the branches of a forest, transforming the outdoor field features into a unique five-dimensional experience.

One of the design's most striking elements is the large hall's light box concept. Large-scale floor-to-ceiling windows are transparent to both sides, extending the spatial perception of vision and introducing outdoor greenery into the room along with the timing and light changes. The windows frame the natural scenery, turning it into a living painting and infusing the space with vitality.

Yi-Chun Pan's Forestry Ocean design has received significant recognition, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Forestry Ocean is a testament to Yi-Chun Pan's ability to create spaces that not only serve functional purposes but also provide a sanctuary for residents, offering a breath of fresh air in the midst of a bustling city.
