Nanxianglou Art Hotel: A Testament to Hakka Architecture

PleasantHouse Design's Award-Winning Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Located in the historic Gankeng Village, Shenzhen, the Nanxianglou Art Hotel stands as a beacon of architectural excellence, blending traditional Hakka influences with modern design elements. The hotel, designed by PleasantHouse Design, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Southern Fujian and the Hakka people, and has garnered international acclaim for its unique approach to architecture.

The Nanxianglou Art Hotel is a part of the developing complex at the site, and has incorporated essential elements from the Hakka architectural culture. The hotel features grey tile walls, thick wood doors and beams, and carven sculptures along the eaves, components that were meticulously disassembled from buildings in Southern Fujian, marked, and reassembled in their new location. The hotel's design is a homage to the past, a celebration of the present, and a vision for the future.

The hotel's unique design is further accentuated by its innovative use of materials. Bamboo, flooring tiles, straw stretch fabric, leather, tempered glass, moire tempered glass, copper stainless steel, rusted iron plates, texture painting, glazed tiles, Mosaic, stone, bare concrete walls, and carpet have all been used to create a design that is as diverse as it is cohesive. The hotel and interior cover an area of 5,090sqm, while the landscape spans 1,263sqm, creating a spacious and inviting environment for guests.

The hotel's design is not just about aesthetics, but also about functionality. The pyramid-inspired steel-framed glass roofing contrasts with the old buildings, creating a unique visual experience. The glass house on the second floor serves as an extension of the interior space, creating a seamless transition between the inside and outside. The hotel contains 52 guestrooms, each designed with style and comfort in mind. The partitions of the bathrooms were replaced by glass walls to reduce the oppressing sensation caused by the enclosed space.

The design of the Nanxianglou Art Hotel was not without its challenges. The architects had to find a way to drain rainwater and eliminate the noise caused by raindrops hitting the surface of the glass house. Each glass pane was specially treated to tackle these issues, while still allowing sufficient sunlight to enter the interior.

The Nanxianglou Art Hotel is more than just a building; it is a celebration of the Hakka culture and a testament to the power of design. The hotel was awarded the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. As PleasantHouse Design continues to push the boundaries of architecture, the Nanxianglou Art Hotel stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when tradition and innovation come together.
