Sequence Rhythm: A Masterpiece of Lobby Design

Chin-Feng Wu and Chih-Sheng Fan's Award-Winning Congregation Housing Lobby

The inspiration for Sequence Rhythm came from the lobby's original layout, which featured two large pillars that obstructed the view. The designers decided to turn this challenge into an opportunity by creating a large light decoration resembling the infinite symbol of “∞” with the ceiling that holds the two pillars. This innovative solution not only served as lighting and decorative art but also justified the existence of the pillars.

Wu and Fan's design stands out for its use of materials and the creation of visual rhythm. They selected marble, solid wood grating, and metal components, integrating abundant linear accents to create a rhythmic performance. This design approach introduces light, maintains visual cleanliness, and pulls up visual elevation angles, thus creating a unique and engaging environment.

The designers used marbles, wood grating, and metals to realize their design. They surrounded the pillars with thin stone plates to create a circular installation, making it the visual spotlight of the lobby. A marble collage was added surrounding the grounds, mounted with corresponding fluid loop patterns to ensure design consistency.

The project, which started in November 2017 in Taoyuan, Taiwan, and finished in February 2018, was exhibited in March 2018. The design process involved overcoming several challenges, including the introduction of light into a building located in a hidden lane and the decoration of two bulky columns that were visual obstructions. The designers' innovative solutions, such as the use of wood gratings to allow natural light to pass through and the creation of a large light decoration, resulted in a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Sequence Rhythm is a testament to Wu and Fan's innovative approach to design and their ability to overcome architectural challenges. Their design, which was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, showcases their remarkable expertise and innovation, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
