Stefan Canuel, the Art Director and Designer of the project, aimed to create a clean and sophisticated publication to mark the decade-long journey of the Azrieli Fellows Program. The book was released during a special evening Gala devoted to celebrating the Fellows who have been part of the program over the past ten years. The design is unique in its presentation, with a casebound book featuring a three-panel cover that folds to meet at the center, creating a slipcase effect without the need for an additional piece.
The book's design was realized using a 128-page, casebound with a 2 flaps gate fold cover. The cover was sewn into book blocks, trimmed to size, and the spine was glued. The hardcover was bound to a .098" thick binder's board. The book was printed in 4 colors process on McCoy Matte 100lb. Cover with black foil over Neenah Touché® papers black soft touch, by Flash Reproduction. The gate fold cover allows the book to open very wide, serving as a box for the book.
The project started in August 2017 in Ottawa, Canada, and was completed in November 2017 in Toronto, Canada. Despite the tight timeframe, the book was written, designed, and printed in less than 90 days, showcasing the team's efficiency and dedication.
The design team included Editor-in-Chief Benita Hansraj, Editor Abby Robins, and various photographers and photo editors. The team's collective effort resulted in a product that not only commemorates the Fellows' achievements but also stands as a testament to innovative design and craftsmanship.
The Silver A' Design Award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Canuel's design, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, certainly fits this description. The award is a recognition of the design's excellence and its ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
In conclusion, Stefan Canuel's commemoration book design for the Azrieli Fellows Program's 10th anniversary is a testament to innovative design and craftsmanship. Its unique casebound book with a three-panel cover gate fold and the prestigious Silver A' Design Award it received are a testament to Canuel's creativity and skill.
