Paper Clip: An Innovative Invitation Card Design

An Invitation Card Inspired by the Shape of a Paper Clip

This is an invitation card designed by Yi Yi for a touring exhibition. The creativity of the typeface design and graphic design comes from the shape of a paper clip, symbolizing the significance of the exhibition's journey. The exhibition, which began in 2009 and returned to its starting point in 2018, has traveled to nine cities over nine years. The paper clip font design represents the itinerant nature of the exhibition.

The invitation package is unique and stands out with its inspiration drawn from a paper clip. The Chinese and English font designs, as well as the graphic design, are derived from the shape of the paper clip. The package consists of four cards, all fixed together by a paper clip. This design choice not only adds a playful element for the audience but also reinforces the symbolism of the itinerant exhibition.

The realization of this design involves the use of special cardboard and metal ink for printing and production, enhancing the texture and quality of the cards. The design of the English letters is directly inspired by the shape of the paper clip, further emphasizing the concept behind the invitation.

The specifications of the invitation cards are 15cm x 21cm x 0.5cm, providing a compact yet substantial presence. The project was initiated in August 2018 in Beijing and completed in October 2018, with an exhibition at the CAFA Art Museum in November 2018.

Prior to the font design, extensive research was conducted to study the combination of the paper clip's shape and function with the font shape. Real paper clips were used to create various shapes, allowing exhibition visitors to compare the paper clip's form with the font design. This interactive element added a layer of interest and engagement for the audience.

The innovative design of the Paper Clip invitation card has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2020. This award acknowledges the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the design, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Paper Clip invitation card is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive experiences, ultimately contributing to a better world.
