With over 50 minorities in China, 1983Asia embarked on a mission to shed light on the remarkable culture of the Zhuang minority. The Menogga project aims to bring the traditional character of their culture to the forefront through a modern design approach, serving as a promoter of Guangxi province's aesthetic culture.
What sets Menogga apart is its deep-rooted connection to the Zhuang minority's folklore. According to legend, humans are born from flowers, and the goddess Menogga is still worshipped by the Zhuang people today. Despite being a story belonging to a minority, 1983Asia recognized the beauty behind it and infused the concept into the brand.
Menogga embodies the natural connotations of the female spirit, fraternity, and tolerance that are integral to Zhuang culture. By injecting these concepts into the brand, 1983Asia aims to communicate the aesthetic feelings of matriarchal societies and extend the aesthetic characteristics of women's aesthetics to a wider audience.
The realization of the Menogga design involved extensive cultural research into the Zhuang minority. To preserve the authenticity of the traditional image, 1983Asia scanned the Zhuang minority fabric Menogga image and employed AI, PS, and other software for the design process. In addition to the visual brand design, the team also created derivatives such as clothing, packaging, and umbrellas.
The branding design of Menogga goes beyond visual appeal. It encapsulates the spirit of the brand, including the story behind it, an impressive image, and effective aesthetic communication. By designing from a female perspective and combining historical stories with modern design skills, 1983Asia ensures a more impactful and engaging communication experience.
The Menogga project was completed in March 2018 in Guangxi, China. Throughout the duration of the project, 1983Asia immersed themselves in the Zhuang minority culture, conducting research by speaking to local Zhuang people and studying relevant articles.
One of the main challenges of the Menogga project was to bring the ancient and lesser-known Zhuang minority culture into daily life through modern design skills. The long-term goal of the project is to foster a deeper understanding of the Zhuang culture and allow people to appreciate the rich history of this minority group.
Menogga, with its captivating design and deep cultural significance, has been recognized for its excellence. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
