Changing Perspectives: An Interactive Installation of Environmental Typography

Transforming Typography into an Engaging Experience

Inspired by environmental typography installations that use perspective in a unique way, designer Haley Tebo created an interactive installation that challenges viewers to change their perspective and engage with typography in a whole new way. This installation, titled "Changing Perspectives," combines art, design, and technology to create a captivating experience that draws people in and encourages them to interact with the space.

Using the dimensions of the vertical glass panels above a fountain in front of the university's art building, Tebo chose Helvetica Condensed as the font for the installation. The typography is strategically placed so that as people walk by, the shapes align to form a message that can be read from either direction. This clever use of perspective and movement creates a dynamic experience for viewers, compelling them to pause and align themselves with the piece in order to read it.

Installed on the art building at the university, "Changing Perspectives" can be viewed from inside the gallery or across campus, drawing people in and sparking their curiosity. The lighting of the installation also adds to its impact, as the shapes of the typography are reflected in the form of shadows and reflections, creating an ever-changing visual spectacle.

The realization of this design involved the use of Adobe software to create slides that were then projected onto the building. The shapes were traced with a china marker and covered with frosted vinyl, which was then cut out to create the typography. Each letter is approximately 1-2 feet tall, varying in size depending on the distance from the viewer.

The installation of "Changing Perspectives" took place over a two-week period in May 2019, following extensive research and planning. Tebo and her team scouted local areas to find the optimal environment for the typography, ultimately choosing the university campus for its convenience and strong conceptual fit. The design was very well received, with people complimenting it as it was being installed.

This innovative installation challenges traditional notions of typography and invites viewers to actively engage with the art. By combining art, architecture, design, and technology, "Changing Perspectives" creates a unique and immersive experience that transforms the way we perceive and interact with typography.

Winner of the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020, "Changing Perspectives" exemplifies outstanding creativity and resourcefulness. This award recognizes designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place. Through its ingenuity and technical prowess, "Changing Perspectives" sets a new standard for interactive installations and pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of environmental typography.
