Mezzanine Apartment: A Unique Blend of Functionality and Style

Introducing the Innovative Design by Yi-Lun Hsu

The Mezzanine Apartment is a stunning example of interior design that combines functionality, style, and innovation. Designed by the talented Yi-Lun Hsu, this project showcases the transformation of an old house into a modern living space that prioritizes space utilization and privacy.

The main highlight of this design is the scissor-shaped staircase located in the center of the apartment, connecting the upper and lower floors. Not only does it serve as a functional element, but it also houses a storage room for large items, maximizing the use of space. Additionally, behind the TV wall, a separate dressing room and housekeeping room have been cleverly planned. This space also includes a clothes dryer and ironing equipment, catering to the humid climate of Hsinchu city.

What sets the Mezzanine Apartment apart is its unique layout. With a height of 4.3 meters, the upper floor is dedicated to private areas such as the master bedroom, second bedroom, and study room. On the other hand, the lower floor serves as the entrance, living room, kitchen, and storage room. This thoughtful division ensures privacy while maintaining an open and spacious feel throughout the apartment.

The design of the living room adds an element of fun to the high space. The main TV wall features a 15-degree V-shaped sloping wood, creating a visually appealing focal point. The bay window scatters light evenly, illuminating the living room with a warm and inviting ambiance. A light blue color scheme connects the back wall of the sofa to the outer wall of the study room on the second floor, guiding the eye upwards. This color, the client's favorite, can be seen throughout the entire space, adding a cohesive and personalized touch.

The Mezzanine Apartment also incorporates elements of nature into its design. The railing of the second floor, made of punched-plate, allows for the hanging of plants, creating a natural green atmosphere. Additionally, a pair of large transparent sliding doors in the study room enhances interaction with the living room and provides a panoramic view when opened.

This remarkable design was realized in 2019 in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The renovation of the old house presented a challenge for the designer, who had to maintain the structure while maximizing natural lighting. However, through careful planning and innovative solutions, Yi-Lun Hsu successfully transformed the space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing home.

The Mezzanine Apartment has been recognized for its excellence in design, receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This award is a testament to the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the project. It showcases the integration of industry best practices and technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

The Mezzanine Apartment is a true masterpiece that combines functionality, style, and innovation. With its unique layout, clever storage solutions, and attention to detail, this design by Yi-Lun Hsu sets a new standard in interior design.
