Little Thunder: A Timeless Armchair Design by Grasset Francois

Geometric Stability Meets Rigorous Material Use in Award-Winning Furniture Design

Grasset Francois introduces the Little Thunder armchair, a unique blend of geometric stability and rigorous material use. Inspired by the robust structure of a half-cylinder, this design is a testament to the timeless appeal of functional art.

The Little Thunder armchair is a result of the desire to create a geometrically stable seat using materials efficiently. The design draws its inspiration from the half-cylinder structure, known for its effectiveness and robustness. The addition of a seat and backrest to this basic shape evokes the strong sensations of a summer thunderstorm, hence the name 'Little Thunder'.

The armchair employs a vault shape, one of the most robust structures possible with these materials. This design feature not only provides stability but also adds a decorative element, reminiscent of ancient architecture. The timeless design of Little Thunder ensures its relevance for years to come, a characteristic of truly environmentally and socially responsible design.

After deciding on the vault structure, the design process progressed quickly, with meticulous attention to ergonomic factors. The manufacturing process requires specific skills, including the use of multi-layer wood panels and large moulds. The model is available in lacquered finish with several colour options or in walnut wood veneer.

The armchair, with its width of 800 mm, depth of 630 mm, and height of 730 mm, is designed to create a visual impact. Its geometric curves and crisscrossing lines give it a highly graphical and surprising character. The armchair is available in several finishes to match various indoor decorations. Further studies have yielded versions with wider armrests and strengthened, decorative bases.

The design process, which began in early 2018, took about a year and a half. After numerous sketches and 3D-printed scale models, the shape was adjusted to best suit ergonomic seating positions. The study and production of the laminated timber armchair were done in Chambéry, Savoy, France. The armchair is suitable for both business and home uses, fitting perfectly in an office, waiting room, living room, or home office.

The challenge of this design was to create a visually powerful furniture item that could represent the diversification strategy of the company. It had to be manufactured in small series, ideally by one or several craftsmen. The Little Thunder armchair’s design is based on precise geometrical shapes, featuring harmonious curves and reverse curves. It is structured around an architectural, graphic vault, a timeless, archetypal shape. The armchair stands out for its energetic, surprising, and fascinating character. The chair is made of laminated timber and can be lacquered or veneered with walnut or oak. Its leather cushion provides a comfortable seat.

The Little Thunder armchair was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2020. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
