Fishes Migrating: A Modern Nigiri Sushi Restaurant

Bringing a Fresh Perspective to Japanese Cuisine

As the sunlight filters through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, the bright space of Fishes Migrating seems to invite guests to come in and savor tasty foods. Designed by Mei Hsuan Chiu, this Japanese-style nigiri sushi restaurant breaks away from the traditional gloomy decor and offers a modern dining experience.

Located in Taipei, Taiwan, Fishes Migrating stands out with its unique interior design that sets it apart from other Japanese restaurants. The inspiration for this design came from the architectural structure of the building, which posed challenges due to the presence of large columns and shafts in the central area. Mei Hsuan Chiu decided to embrace these elements and built the sushi counter in the central area, enclosing the original columns and creating a focal point for the restaurant.

One of the standout features of Fishes Migrating is the use of circular acrylic sheets in different tangerine colors that adorn the wall surfaces. These sheets figuratively manifest the image of migratory fishes, adding a vibrant and dynamic element to the space. The lower height of the window sills allows for a great view of the tree-shaded road, creating a connection between the indoor and outdoor environments.

The design of Fishes Migrating also prioritizes functionality and customer experience. The separated kitchen and sushi counter ensure a smooth traffic flow, while the front wall of the kitchen, decorated with Hydrofluoric acid etching glass, adds a delicate opaque and reflective texture. The dining area offers a variety of seating options, including bar stools for individual customers, dining tables for groups, and booths for a more intimate experience. This thoughtful arrangement allows customers to appreciate the exquisite cooking skills from any seat in the restaurant.

The overall ambiance of Fishes Migrating is bright, comfortable, and refreshing. The tangerine bar stools at the sushi counter correspond to the color of salmon roe, creating a cohesive visual experience. The use of gray seats in the left dining area and curved lines in the booths adds a touch of sophistication and elegance. The diverse dining ambiences seamlessly integrate multiple design styles and space functions, catering to the needs of different customers.

Mei Hsuan Chiu successfully overcame the challenges of transforming a traditional Japanese-style sushi restaurant into a modern space that appeals to young pink-collar workers. The design of Fishes Migrating has received recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Fishes Migrating stands as a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and culinary excellence, providing a unique dining experience for sushi enthusiasts.
