The Thrilling Quivers: A Music Center Inspired by Taiko

Integrating Japanese Culture and Design

The world of Taiko is transcendent, and the first-hand experience is the only way to feel the spirit of Taiko. The Thrilling Quivers, designed by Peng-Kai Chen, is a music center that beautifully integrates the interior design plan with the Japanese lifestyle and belief, especially with the culture of Taiko.

Taiko, the traditional Japanese musical instrument, serves as the spiritual symbol that inspired the designer. The space, covering 294 square meters, features a unique design that reflects the essence of Taiko and the Japanese culture. The decoration of the entrance door, figuratively shaped like a mountain, expresses the fruitful learning experiences of Taiko for everyone.

In the classroom, the design incorporates sound-absorbing cross-like materials on the walls to mitigate sound transmission. The sophisticated structures of wooden bricks not only enhance the aesthetics but also improve the acoustic experience for the drummers. Extensive mirrors on the stage help the drummers improve their postures, while adjustable bamboos, placed in front of the mirrors, cater to different Taiko performances.

At the reception counter, pendant lights made of 400 drumsticks symbolize the immeasurable efforts and enthusiasm required to become a master drummer. The incalculable dents on the drumsticks tell a story of dedication and passion. Alongside the counter, circular patterns on the wall, embellished with the six-words Tibetan mantra "om ma ni bai me hum," create a visual representation of the sounds of drumming. This design element also symbolizes the power of life, reminiscent of the sound babies hear in their mothers' wombs.

The interior design of The Thrilling Quivers stimulates both auditory and optical sensations, creating a truly immersive experience for those learning Taiko. The comprehensive adornments of wooden grilles exemplify the classifications of Yin-and-Yang and the drumming rhythms, represented by sequential digital numbers 0 and 1.

The design of The Thrilling Quivers was not without its challenges. The application of decoration materials required careful consideration to strike a balance between aesthetic composition and environmental protection. Through innovative experiments and the integration of technology and lifestyle, the design successfully showcases its uniqueness and originality. The efforts put into consolidating diverse tangible and intangible values are now comprehensively demonstrating the design skills and aesthetics of the space.

The Thrilling Quivers, completed in April 2018 in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, is a testament to the designer's deep understanding and appreciation of Taiko and Japanese culture. It has been recognized for its excellence, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness of the design, which contributes to the improvement of quality of life and makes the world a better place.
