TM Headquarters: A Zen-Inspired Office Space

Jun Murata's Award-Winning Design Fuses Functionality with Spirituality

Jun Murata, a renowned designer, has transformed a typical tenant space into an outstanding headquarters for TM. The design, inspired by Zen principles, has won the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This article explores the unique features and inspirations behind this innovative design.

Jun Murata's design for the TM Headquarters is a masterclass in effective space utilization within a casual building. The designer has skillfully incorporated a variety of materials such as stone, metal, and wood, creating a unified aesthetic across the office floors. The use of soft indirect lighting enhances the ambiance, while the interplay of light and shadow adds a dynamic element to the space, providing a refreshing environment for the employees.

The TM Headquarters is a space where tension and relaxation coexist. The ground floor houses a friendly store, while the upper floor, with its Zen-like atmosphere, serves as the headquarters. The entrance features a Maitreya Bodhisattva, a symbol of compassion, enshrined in the dark, welcoming guests gently. The precision brought by the vertical aluminum lattices adds a sense of order to the space, subtly separating the meeting and space spaces.

The selection of materials for the design required meticulous examination. For the aluminum surface, Murata chose alumite, a material with moderate reflectivity and a silky feel. The construction was carried out with precision, ensuring that the luminaires and extraneous members are not visible at all. The aluminum lattices, which are layered doubly, gently shield the line of sight, creating a screen that reflects the diligent attitude of the employees and embodies the dignity and spirituality of the company.

The headquarters also features a metal gate made of aluminum lattices located at the center of the office. This gate not only secures the privacy of the meeting space but also adds a sense of pride for the employees and a visual treat for the guests. The double louver softly covers the view of each other, creating a sense of tension and active activity within the company.

The design project, which started in April 2016 in Osaka and finished in January 2017, was exhibited in 3 Architects "Mutetsu" in April 2017. Murata faced the challenge of bringing calmness, healing, and integration into a noisy office space. However, by incorporating elements of Zen and a dignified impression into the space, he was able to create a unique office environment that is both functional and spiritually uplifting.

In conclusion, Jun Murata's design for the TM Headquarters is a testament to his innovative approach to design and his ability to infuse spirituality into a functional space. The design, which has won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, is a shining example of how design can transform a typical tenant space into an outstanding headquarters.
