Eisackwerk St. Anton: A Lighting Design that Connects Technology and Nature

Creating a Mystical Atmosphere in the Heart of the Mountains

The Eisackwerk St. Anton lighting project, designed by Herward Dunkel, is a testament to the intersection of technology and nature. With a focus on environmental preservation and the conservation of natural resources, this unique installation brings together the mystique of the mountains and the cutting-edge technology of the Eisackwerk St. Anton power plant.

A theatre of lighting unfolds deep within the 1,000-meter tunnels of the Eisackwerk St. Anton power plant. The customised luminaires and stainless steel mounting brackets create a mesmerizing spectacle of changing colors, enhancing the relationship between mother earth and mankind's co-existence. This lighting design is a true reflection of the company's values, promoting consciousness and a different approach to energy supply.

The Eisackwerk St. Anton lighting project is not only visually stunning but also environmentally friendly. It is the first project of its kind in Italy to receive recognition as one of the ten most environmentally friendly projects. This accolade highlights the efforts made to eliminate negative impacts on the environment and sets an example for other projects across Europe.

Overcoming the challenges of working within a mountain environment, the design team successfully captured the vastness of the technical intervention while ensuring durability in the face of dirt, corrosiveness, and high humidity. The result is a lighting installation that not only enhances the Eisackwerk St. Anton power plant but also creates a unique experience for visitors, connecting them with their inner depth.

Operated with an aesthetic approach, the lighting design features floating light spectrums reflecting on the water surface, creating an emotional dialogue with vibrant light settings. Visitors can explore the power plant and its surroundings while being immersed in a captivating visual experience.

The Eisackwerk St. Anton lighting project was realized between March and August 2019 in South Tyrol Bolzano, Italy. It stands as a testament to the power of design to merge technology and nature, creating a harmonious relationship that promotes environmental awareness and appreciation.

With its recognition as a Bronze A' Design Award winner in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, the Eisackwerk St. Anton lighting project showcases the ingenuity and resourcefulness of its design. This prestigious award acknowledges the project's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
