The Praise Assembly: A Church and Community Hub Designed by Brevity Studios

Creating a Space for Worship, Gathering, and Learning

The ethos of The Praise Assembly goes beyond traditional worship and extends to serving and helping the neighborhood. Unlike a typical church space, this venue is open to the community, providing areas for gathering, interaction, and learning. The layout of the space is divided into three zones: Worship, Community, and Youth.

The Community and Youth spaces are equipped with study areas, pantries, therapy rooms, and activity and meeting rooms. This design approach ensures that the venue is not only used during worship but also serves as a versatile space for various community activities.

One of the standout features of The Praise Assembly is the sculptural feature wall shelf that resembles a tree canopy. This functional element provides seating and bar tables along its length, creating a unique and inviting space for congregation members and visitors. The shelf was designed using parametric modelling tools and constructed from birch plywood, with CNC cutting ensuring precise fabrication and secure interlocking of each piece.

The project area spans approximately 1,400 sqm and is located in half a floor of an office tower in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. Design work commenced in May 2018, and construction was completed in January 2019.

Throughout the design process, the Brevity Studios team conducted extensive research to understand the needs of both a traditional church for Sunday worship and communal spaces found in lounges or co-working offices. Additionally, research was done on biblical stories to inform the more decorative features within the design.

One of the challenges faced by the design team was liaising with a large committee of members with different priorities. However, they successfully combined these requirements into a cohesive design that caters to both the church and the community.

The Praise Assembly has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
