How do we determine the value of technology and ecology? This question sparked the creative journey of artist Arlene Sun, leading to the creation of her thought-provoking exhibition, Golden City. In a world where technology is constantly evolving, Sun challenges us to consider the environmental impact of our actions and the value we place on discarded devices.
Golden City stands out from other art installations due to its innovative use of electronic waste. Sun repurposes land-filled computer parts, giving them a new life and igniting people's environmental consciousness. Through her artwork, Sun aims to raise awareness about the environmental cost of discarding technology and the potential value that lies within these seemingly obsolete devices.
The exhibition features abstract acrylic and mixed media pieces on canvas, measuring 30'' x 30''. Sun's meticulous craftsmanship and use of metallic coatings create a visually striking and thought-provoking experience for viewers.
By transforming e-waste into vital components of her artwork, Sun challenges our perception of value and encourages us to reconsider our relationship with technology. The discarded devices, once seen as garbage, now take on a golden hue, symbolizing the potential for renewal and transformation.
Golden City was realized through the use of acrylic, electronic waste, metallic coatings, Arduino, and lighting. Sun's technical expertise and creative vision come together to create a captivating exhibition that merges art, sustainability, and technology.
The project, curated by Dandi Gu and with academic advice from Zi, began in December 2017 in New York and concluded in April 2019. The exhibition took place at the Novado Gallery in April-May 2019, captivating audiences with its unique blend of art and environmental consciousness.
Through Golden City, Arlene Sun challenges us to reflect on our commitment to things and our role in shaping their fate. By repurposing electronic waste into art, she invites us to consider the deeper meaning and value that objects hold in our lives. Sun's thought-provoking exhibition prompts us to question our relationship with technology and the environment, urging us to make more sustainable choices.
Golden City has been recognized for its innovation and impact, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the exhibition's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, contributing to a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
