This unique display stand, aptly named "Sign Language," offers a novel way to showcase anything from candies to personal collections. Designed by Naai-Jung Shih, this stand draws inspiration from the visual communication of sign language, where messages are conveyed through hand gestures. Just like a conductor leading an orchestra, this design creates a visual symphony between the stand and the displayed subject.
The standout feature of the Sign Language display stand is its ability to rotate and be set in various combinations. It comes in different sizes to accommodate a wide range of shapes and sizes of objects. The larger set features branches made by the compositions of moving palms and gestures, creating a captivating image collage. On the other hand, the smaller set consists of two separated image collages for each hand, along with a housing system for axial-type objects.
One of the strengths of this design lies in its versatility. The stand's size and orientation can be easily adjusted, allowing for endless possibilities in displaying objects. Whether it's a jar of jelly beans, pens, or even plants, the Sign Language stand provides a metaphorical platform to showcase various items. The housing grids perfectly complement the sense of sweetness in jelly beans, while pens align with the concept of sign language as a form of writing in the air. Plants, on the other hand, serve as a metaphor to admire Mother Nature.
The Sign Language display stand is not limited to specific objects; it can also be left empty, allowing for a minimalist aesthetic. The design's adaptability and open-endedness encourage users to explore their creativity and personalize their displays.
Creating the Sign Language display stand involved a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The design configuration comprises two parts: the base configuration and the instance to fill-in. The base configuration is a grid structure, while the instance is a square shape. The shape was transformed to fit into the deformed grid and then extruded to a certain depth. A 3D parametric program and rapid prototyping machine were used for production.
To add a touch of glamour, the Sign Language display stand features a gold foil finish. This finish was meticulously applied by an expert who specializes in traditional Buddhism sculptures. The intricate concave holes posed a challenge, but the final result showcases the expert craftsmanship. The gold foil was applied twice to ensure a flawless and long-lasting finish.
The Sign Language display stand, with its unique design and versatile functionality, was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
Naai-Jung Shih's Sign Language display stand is a testament to the power of visual communication and the art of display. Its ability to silently convey messages and create a harmonious connection between the stand and the displayed subject makes it a truly innovative addition to any space.
