Quantitative Soap: A Revolutionary Approach to Hygiene

WeiCheng Deng and HongJun Chen Redefine Soap Usage with Innovative Design

In an era where hygiene is paramount, WeiCheng Deng and HongJun Chen have revolutionized the everyday soap with their award-winning design, the Quantitative Soap. Inspired by the form of a chocolate bar, this unique design aims to enhance hygiene practices while adding a touch of enjoyment to the daily routine.

Soap, a staple in every household, is often overlooked when it comes to design innovation. However, WeiCheng Deng and HongJun Chen have challenged this norm by creating a soap that is not only functional but also interactive and hygienic. The Quantitative Soap, with its blocky, breakable structure, encourages users to use it in parts, similar to a chocolate bar. This design approach not only measures soap usage but also reduces the repetitive and uncontrolled use of a large volume of soap, which can be unhygienic.

The Quantitative Soap is crafted through a meticulous process where fat and sodium hydroxide are co-cooked, hydrolyzed into higher fatty acid sodium and glycerin, and then poured into a mold resembling a chocolate bar. The result is a soap bar that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. With dimensions of 100*60*25(mm), the soap is easy to handle and store.

What sets the Quantitative Soap apart from other designs is its interactive nature. Users are encouraged to break off pieces of the soap, much like they would with a chocolate bar, thereby controlling the amount of soap used and promoting healthier shower experiences. This innovative approach to soap usage has been well received, with the design being awarded Silver in the A' Beauty, Personal Care and Cosmetic Products Design Award in 2020.

The design process, which began in Shunde in May 2019 and concluded in August 2019, was not without its challenges. The team had to consider the rationality of the amount of soap, the control of the mold, the anti-slip properties of the soap, and the size of the texture. However, through research and analysis, they were able to overcome these obstacles and create a design that not only solves hygiene issues but also adds a touch of enjoyment to the daily routine.

The Quantitative Soap is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday objects. By reimagining the form and function of soap, WeiCheng Deng and HongJun Chen have created a product that is not only practical and hygienic but also enjoyable to use. This innovative approach to design is a reminder of the potential for creativity and innovation in even the most mundane aspects of life.
