Private Villa Juge: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Japanese Architecture

Reimagining Traditional Japanese Ethos in a Contemporary Setting

The Private Villa Juge, designed by Maiko Minami, is a stunning example of modern architecture that seamlessly incorporates traditional Japanese elements. Located in the historic city of Kyoto, this villa stands out as a unique and refreshing addition to the traditional surroundings.

The main objective of this design project was to establish new value by creating a modern architecture that respects and celebrates the traditional Japanese ethos. Kyoto, known for its rich history and abundance of historical buildings, provided the perfect backdrop for this endeavor.

What sets the Private Villa Juge apart is its fresh sensibility and reinterpretation of traditional Japanese methods. The villa features three individual gardens, reminiscent of small gardens found in old townhouses, which contribute to a vibrant atmosphere that changes with the seasons. These gardens showcase various styles and create a strong connection with the external environment, despite the limited space.

One of the standout features of the villa is the use of Japanese Washi Papers on doors and glasses. These papers reflect the aesthetic play of sunlight and shadow, creating a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere within the villa. This unique element adds a touch of traditional Japanese craftsmanship to the modern design.

The design also incorporates several innovative techniques to enhance the overall experience. The main courtyard, connected to the dining and living room, is covered with white pebbles that reflect sunlight, creating a serene and peaceful ambiance. The central void, featuring a sculptural staircase, allows sunlight to filter into the guest rooms through various glass installations. Handmade Washi paper is used on one of the windows, creating a soft and diffused sunlight effect on the inside, while another window features bubbles that create an abstract profile of the surrounding courtyard.

The design specifications of the Private Villa Juge further highlight the attention to detail and thoughtful design choices. Two types of windows were strategically placed to provide different views of the exterior. The five-triangle window on the entrance mimics the historic symbol of Yasaka Pagoda, framing the Japanese garden view and welcoming visitors with a picturesque scene. The deep-framed window on the second floor, inspired by the Japanese garden method called "Ikedori," focuses on highlighting the Yasaka Pagoda by trimming away the surrounding outside view.

The Private Villa Juge offers a unique and intimate experience for its guests. With two stories, two bedrooms, and two tatami rooms, the wooden villa provides generous private spaces for relaxation and retreat. The courtyards connected to the guest rooms allow for fresh air and a connection to nature, while the outdoor bath offers an extraordinary way to unwind while enjoying the exotic garden view. Guests can also explore the nearby celebrated Kyoto temples and historical areas at their own leisure.

The project, which started in May 2018 and was completed in April 2019, required extensive research and careful consideration of the surrounding environment. The eaves height of the villa's facade was meticulously designed to maintain harmony with the original townscape while ensuring a comfortable volume on the inside. Researching adjacent houses and their architectural features allowed for a facade that seamlessly blends with the historic view of Kyoto. The unique colored door, finished with natural clear paint, serves as a striking entrance to the unexpected modern inner space.

Designing a new building in an ancient town presented its fair share of challenges. The design team focused on finding the perfect balance between the past and the future, incorporating Japanese elements in updated and refined ways. The exposed wooden beams, reminiscent of traditional Kyoto townhouses, were finished with a light and natural tone, while gold brass and silver stainless ceiling lights were installed to complement the golden ceiling and silver walls in the tatami rooms.

The Private Villa Juge is a testament to the beauty and versatility of modern architecture when combined with traditional Japanese ethos. It offers a unique and immersive experience for guests, allowing them to appreciate the rich history of Kyoto while enjoying the comforts of contemporary design. This design project has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2020, solidifying its place as an outstanding and creatively ingenious design that contributes to the improvement of quality of life.
