Tongue-Bongue: A Playful Candy Package

A Unique Design by Victoria Ax

Unleashing Creativity in Candy Packaging

When it comes to food packaging, designers often strive to create something unique and eye-catching. Victoria Ax, a talented designer, took this challenge to a whole new level with her innovative candy package design, Tongue-Bongue. Inspired by the act of eating and the playful nature of sweets, this tongue-shaped package is a delightful and unexpected twist on traditional candy packaging.

What sets Tongue-Bongue apart from other candy packages is its unconventional shape. Ax wanted to capture the essence of the eating process, particularly the act of taking and putting food in the mouth. By creating a package that resembles a tongue, she created a surreal metaphor of a "tongue on (human) tongue." This unique design element adds a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the candy-buying experience.

The Tongue-Bongue candy package is made from paper, making it both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. With dimensions of 50 x 50 x 70 mm when assembled and a printing area of 240 x 250 mm, this package is compact yet spacious enough to hold a generous amount of candy.

One of the design's standout features is its interactive nature. The tongue-shaped package opens up to reveal a mouth-like opening, which serves as an additional layer of protection against accidental openings. The candy-tongues are placed inside the mouth, creating a delightful surprise for the consumer. This interactive element adds an extra layer of engagement and enjoyment to the candy-eating experience.

Ax's Tongue-Bongue design was initially created for a German package competition and was developed in Moscow from February to April 2017. Throughout the design process, Ax focused on creating a package that would stand out on store shelves and entice consumers to make a spontaneous purchase. By deviating from the standard square or rectangular packaging, Tongue-Bongue offers a fresh and exciting alternative that consumers will be eager to hold, study, and buy.

One of the main challenges Ax faced during the design process was figuring out how to transport the package without damaging its delicate upper part. The solution came in positioning the package as a gift or a luxury item, as it is best suited for hand delivery. This strategic approach ensures that the package remains intact and maintains its appeal to discerning customers.

A testament to its ingenuity, Tongue-Bongue was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. Tongue-Bongue's playful and unconventional approach to candy packaging contributes to the improvement of quality of life, making it a worthy recipient of this esteemed award.

Victoria Ax's Tongue-Bongue candy package design is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in the world of packaging. By breaking away from traditional norms and embracing a playful and unexpected concept, Ax has created a design that not only stands out but also brings joy and excitement to the candy-buying experience. With its tongue-shaped design and interactive elements, Tongue-Bongue is sure to leave a lasting impression on consumers and inspire future packaging designs.
