Unveiling the Dorina Nowill Annual Report: A Design Masterpiece

Exploring Ruis Vargas' Innovative Approach to Inclusive Design

Delve into the unique design elements of the Dorina Nowill Annual Report, a creation by Ruis Vargas that seamlessly integrates Braille into its design, offering an inclusive reading experience.

The Dorina Nowill Foundation, dedicated to serving individuals with blindness or low vision, has always incorporated Braille into the daily lives of its community. When it came to designing the foundation's annual report, Ruis Vargas and his team at Laika used this as their starting point. They incorporated the points of Braille writing into both the tactile and visual aspects of the report, creating a graphic identity that is both unique and inclusive.

What sets this annual report apart is its integration of Braille elements throughout. These elements dictate the pace of the publication and serve as components of interaction with the reader, offering an experience of this unique writing model. The cover also features a relief print on the dots, allowing blind individuals to experience tactile reading. This integration of form and content provides an inclusive meaning to the book.

The report was printed in CMYK-scale colors on offset paper, chosen for its tactile aspect due to its porosity. The cover, when fully opened, offers a panoramic view of the use of Braille writing points. The use of dry relief on the cover provides a tactile experience to the reader, offering points of Braille writing.

The annual report serves not only to mark the entity's fiscal year and establish guidelines for the following year but also as a presentation of the foundation. It contributes to attracting sponsors from medium and large companies. The aesthetic and graphic aspect of the publication gives the document longevity and validates its relevance to the sector.

The project, which started in February 2019 and concluded in May 2019 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was based on the synergy between linguistic and pictorial skills. The Dorina Nowill annual report expands upon the detailed and strategic work of building an imaginary universe that represents the culture of the Dorina Nowill brand. The challenge was to develop a publication that addressed the need to include blind or low vision individuals.

The Dorina Nowill Annual Report is a testament to the foundation's performance and is essential for maintaining its funders. The graphic project developed by Laika sought to bring the reality of the blind to the experience of reading the book, exploring the tactile sensation, and presenting the reader with aspects of the daily life of blind or low vision individuals through Braille reading resources. This innovative design was awarded Silver in A' Print and Published Media Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
