Ching-Fa Lung's Award-Winning Book Design Sheds New Light on Perception

Ching-Fa Lung, a renowned designer, drew inspiration from the omnipresence of light in human life. From storytelling to communication, light has been a pivotal part of human existence since time immemorial. 'Refracting Reality' is Lung's attempt to question and explore this perception of the world through various forms of expression.

What sets 'Refracting Reality' apart from other book designs is its unique approach to expressing the characteristics of light through typography and imagery. The material choice for the book, including coated paper, uncoated paper, and a solid prism, further enhances the reader's light experience. The prism, intriguingly, is used as the book's spine, manifesting the perception of light in a tangible form.

The book, printed using an Epson P600 inkjet printer and Red River paper, measures 8.5" x 1.75" x 11.75" and spans 368 pages. The prism can be removed from the book's spine, allowing readers to experience light's properties firsthand. The book's imagery has been curated with this interaction in mind, encouraging readers to engage with the book on a deeper level.

The project, which began in January 2019 in Pasadena, was completed in April 2010. Lung's research delved into the history of human use of light, its metaphors, and its significance in different cultures and religions. The challenge lay in curating the content and creating a compelling narrative for a 368-page book based on extensive research.

'Refracting Reality' has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Print and Published Media Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that display outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. 'Refracting Reality', with its unique exploration of light, certainly fits the bill.
