Better than Perfect

A Magazine that Redefines the Culinary Experience

Everything we do or don't do - good and bad taste is always present. One of Austria's most successful food blogs focuses on good taste. And this is what her 5th magazine "better than perfect" is all about.

Gerhard Kirchschlaeger, renowned designer, has taken the concept of an internet food blog and transformed it into a tangible culinary experience. "Better than Perfect" is a magazine that pushes the boundaries of traditional cooking publications, offering a unique and visually stunning approach to presenting recipes.

The main idea behind "Better than Perfect" is to bring the internet food blog to paper. The magazine showcases creative yet simple recipes, presented through impressive photos and lively typography. The advantages of print over the web are fully utilized, both in terms of tactile experience and conceptual design. The layout challenges traditional viewing habits, creating visual tension and surprise that accompany the reader throughout the magazine.

One of the standout features of "Better than Perfect" is its use of recycled paper made of birch, combined with HP Indigo digital printing technology. This combination not only enhances the sustainability of the magazine but also ensures vibrant and high-quality visuals. The magazine measures 22x31 cm and consists of 32 pages, with a paper cover of 300 g/m and a paper core of 120 g/m. The thread stitching adds a touch of elegance and durability to the design.

Designed by Gerhard Kirchschlaeger in collaboration with Karin Stöttinger and Julia Kirchschlaeger, "Better than Perfect" aims to inspire and encourage readers to explore their culinary skills. The recipes range from simple to more complex, catering to a wide range of cooking abilities. An ingredients index at the end of the magazine serves as a decision-making aid and shopping list, making it easier for readers to select and prepare their desired recipes.

The project, which started in July 2020 and finished in December 2020, was driven by the desire to provide inspiration and motivation for more activity at home. With many people having more time for themselves this year, their own kitchens have become playgrounds for creativity. "Better than Perfect" breaks away from the traditional context of a cooking magazine, focusing on the aesthetics of ingredients and their arrangement on the plate.

Creating a visually distinctive magazine in a saturated market was one of the main challenges faced by the design team. However, through innovative design choices and captivating photography by Karin Stöttinger, "Better than Perfect" stands out from the crowd. The magazine has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category in 2021.

With "Better than Perfect," Gerhard Kirchschlaeger has successfully transformed the concept of an internet food blog into a captivating and tangible magazine. The combination of stunning visuals, unique layout, and a focus on simplicity and creativity makes this magazine a must-have for any culinary enthusiast.
