Kon Paper: Redefining the Magazine Experience

A Unique Blend of Literature, Design, and Illustration

Founded in 2015 by Julia Hell and Pia Lobodzinski, Kon Paper is a magazine that pushes the boundaries of traditional reading experiences. With its innovative design and thought-provoking content, Kon Paper has become a staple in the world of literature and culture.

At the heart of Kon Paper is its commitment to exploring the intersection of different text forms. The magazine features essays, feuilletons, and wortkunst, each challenging the conventional reading environments associated with these genres. By bringing together diverse texts in unexpected ways, Kon Paper sparks new connections and invites readers to engage with literature in a fresh and exciting manner.

Accompanying the thought-provoking texts are captivating illustrations created by a rotating roster of talented artists. These illustrations not only enhance the visual appeal of the magazine but also provide a visual framework that complements the written content. With each issue, readers are treated to a visual feast that adds an extra layer of depth to their reading experience.

In 2020, Kon Paper underwent a redesign to further enhance its appeal and sustainability. The format was adjusted, and the magazine now boasts a solid binding and high-quality paper. Printed on eco-friendly Vivus recycled paper, the magazine is now more environmentally friendly than ever before. With a focus on sustainability, Kon Paper aims to create a product that readers will cherish and keep on their bookshelves for years to come.

The technical specifications of Kon Paper reflect the magazine's commitment to quality. The 220 x 275 mm format provides ample space for the curated content, while the 90g/m2 inner pages and 250g/m2 cover ensure a sturdy and luxurious feel. The magazine is bound with two staples through the spine, a design choice that adds to its durability.

Behind the scenes, the Kon Paper team collaborates closely to bring each issue to life. Weekly staff meetings serve as a platform for discussing text entries, design concepts, and illustration ideas. The team values input from individuals with diverse perspectives, recognizing that this feedback is crucial in creating a product that resonates with readers.

The journey of Kon Paper has not been without its challenges. Rethinking the format from the previous Berlin newspaper style to the current magazine format required a complete overhaul of the editorial workflow. The team had to adapt to the new dimensions and reorganize their approach to content creation. However, these challenges were met with determination and resulted in a magazine that is more cohesive and visually appealing than ever before.

Kon Paper has garnered recognition for its outstanding design and creativity. In 2022, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate technical excellence and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

As Kon Paper continues to evolve, it remains a testament to the power of innovative design and the enduring appeal of literature. With each issue, the magazine invites readers to embark on a journey of exploration and discovery, redefining the way we engage with written word and visual art.
