Hangzhou Eastern Garden: A Symphony of Space and Music

Designed by T.K.Chu Design, this mansion harmonizes music and architecture in a unique way.

Hangzhou Eastern Garden, a private residence designed by T.K.Chu Design, is a unique mansion that harmonizes music and space. The design, inspired by the owners' love for music, took over five years to complete and offers a stunning 270-degree view of the Qiantang River.

The mansion's unique property is a private music room located on the upper floor, which illuminates the entire project. To ensure the best acoustical environment, the sofa originally in the music room was moved to the hallway. The design also tackled the issue of the original shear wall and stairs that disrupted the integrity and fluidity between the dining room and the living room. The solution was to reposition the stairs and reform the shear wall to enhance their decorative attributes.

The design realization technology incorporated well-selected acoustic materials from a Spanish brand that combines excellent acoustic performance with artistic beauty. The geometric modeling of these materials satisfies the house owner's desire for audio pleasure. The design process also utilized high-quality materials such as sequoia brown, Ti-coated stainless steel, eucalyptus wood, ebony, and ultra-clear glass.

The mansion spans an area of 656.9 square meters. The curved glass is used as a handrail for the molding rotary ladder, supported by a single steel bone. The force is concentrated on one point of the floor slab, with metal discs fired at the bottom of the steel bones to evenly disperse the force in the floor, ensuring the load-bearing safety of the building.

The design is a reflection of the symbiotic relationship between art, music, and architecture. The materials used feature both Oriental and Modern characteristics, and delicate artworks with flexible lines and well-arranged order echo the music, creating a harmonious space.

The project started in August 2015 and was completed in May 2019 in Hangzhou. The design faced the challenge of the T shear wall and stairs that lay between the living room and dining room. The solution was to move its position opposite the entrance-hall and alter it to a 6m decorating wall of fish-belly white stone, thus tactfully turning the pain point into the highlight.

Hangzhou Eastern Garden was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
