Luhua Xiaomo: Redefining Sesame Oil Packaging

A Unique Design Inspired by Nostalgia and Authenticity

In the fast-paced world of condiments, Luhua Xiaomo stands out with its innovative packaging design that evokes nostalgia and authenticity. Designed by Tiger Pan, this bottle of grinding sesame oil is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a feast for the eyes.

The inspiration behind the design of Luhua Xiaomo comes from a childhood memory. The bottle is transformed into a straight round shape, reminiscent of the snacks and seasoning stuff wrapped in newspapers during the 1980s. This design choice builds a natural emotional connection with consumers, reminding them of a time when food was precious and scarce.

The label on the bottle is designed to resemble a newspaper, further enhancing the nostalgic appeal. The layout of the label draws inspiration from Chinese old signages of street shops, where characters were placed straight down. This design element conveys the message that the brand is authentic and traceable, adding to the overall appeal of the product.

What sets Luhua Xiaomo apart from other sesame oils in the market is not just its packaging, but also its unique properties. Unlike normal sesame oil, Luhua's grinding sesame oil is hand-made, resulting in a product with less output but a much more fragrant aroma. This attention to detail and commitment to quality is reflected in every aspect of the design.

The realization of the design involved reshaping the bottle with glass, a departure from the typical condiment packaging in China. The cylindrical shape of the bottle gives consumers the feeling of holding a roll of newspaper, adding to the overall experience of using the product.

Technical specifications of the Luhua Xiaomo bottle include a diameter of 50mm and a height of 210mm. The glass bottle is adorned with a 350-degree adhesive label, ensuring that every detail of the newspaper design is captured.

By creating this unique packaging design, Luhua not only upgrades its own branding image but also draws attention to the aesthetic orientation in consumption activities. The bottle of sesame oil now stands out from its competitors, offering consumers a different choice in the condiment market.

The Luhua Xiaomo design project was completed within a span of two months. The design was finished in Shenzhen, while production took place in Laiyang City, Shandong Province.

The design of Luhua Xiaomo was driven by a realization that while Chinese condiment brands focused on improving the taste of their products, they often overlooked the importance of packaging. Luhua Xiaomo aims to change that by combining exceptional quality with a visually appealing design that captures the essence of nostalgia and authenticity.

Overcoming challenges in production, the label on the bottle was unable to cover it entirely. However, this gap was turned into an embossed steelyard's mark, allowing consumers to see the amount of sesame oil remaining. This attention to detail showcases the advanced production technique of the grinding sesame oil and emphasizes its importance in the overall design.

Luhua Xiaomo has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.

Luhua Xiaomo is not just a bottle of sesame oil; it is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday products into objects of desire. With its unique packaging design, Luhua Xiaomo invites consumers to indulge in a sensory experience that combines the flavors of the past with the innovation of the present.
