NE 17: A Timeless Classic Residential House

Creating a Collision of Light and Shadow

NE 17, designed by Yueh Yun Chung, is a residential house that showcases the perfect blend of art, architecture, and design. With its unique features and innovative design, NE 17 stands out as a timeless classic in the world of interior design.

The concept behind NE 17 is to make use of the full-length 20-meter height French-styled windows that offer a breathtaking view of the mountains. These windows not only bring in excellent natural light to the entire apartment but also create a beautiful collision of light and shadow at different times of the day, enhancing the visual impact of the space.

Making every space modular, NE 17 is designed to open up as one entertainment area for gatherings or separately for daily functional needs. The open concept dining area, with its sleek design using black iron, mirror, and painted wooden TV wall feature, sits right beside the windows. To complete the look, an open concept kitchen with a minibar is designed adjacent to the dining area. For daily use, the study area is cordoned off by industrial-feel sliding glass panels, providing a spacious workspace for up to six people with a U-shaped built-in tabletop.

The back wall of the living room is painted with soft shades of silver hue, creating a calming and gradation effect. Titanium plating is used as part of the aisle's ceiling, stretching all the way to the end of the corridor, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space.

NE 17 spans a space of 190 square meters and features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open kitchen, a dining area, a living room, a study studio, and two balconies. The design team, led by Yueh Yun Chung, meticulously planned and executed every detail to ensure a seamless and functional living experience.

During the renovation of the project, the design team faced challenges with the wood veneer materials. Serious defects were encountered, making it impossible to use the veneer on a large scale. After conducting market research, it was discovered that the problem was caused by global climate change. Despite this setback, the team persevered and found innovative solutions to overcome the challenges, resulting in the stunning final design of NE 17.

NE 17 was completed in February 2019 in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The project took approximately eight months to finish, from its inception in June 2018. The attention to detail, meticulous planning, and innovative design choices have earned NE 17 the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This award recognizes the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness of the design, showcasing its strong technical and creative skills that contribute to improving the quality of life.

NE 17, with its timeless classic design, showcases the creativity and innovation of Yueh Yun Chung. The use of natural light, the collision of light and shadow, and the careful selection of materials create a space that is not only visually stunning but also functional and inviting. NE 17 truly exemplifies the harmonious integration of art, architecture, design, and technology in the realm of lifestyle.
